The program requires that students choose one of four available tracks within this major: marine biology, marine geology, physical oceanography or chemical ocean- ography. A B.S. degree in secondary education with a major in marine science is also available for students who have an interest in education. Through this program, students receive certification from the Department of Education to teach Earth science in Pennsylvania secondary schools. A cooperative agreement between Kutztown University and 10 other academic institutions created The Marine Sci- ence Consortium Inc., a nonprofit educational corporation. The Environmental Studies Center is a nonacademic, in- terdepartmental research organization providing interdis- ciplinary research opportunities in marine-related aspects of traditional fields. Courses and degrees are offered only through academic departments of Earth and environmen- tal studies, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, civil engineering and mechanical engineering and mechanics. No specific degrees in oceanography or ocean engineer- ing are offered, but informal options and interdepartmental programs with marine-oriented thesis research can be ar- ranged. Facilities include a freshwater biology lab, environmental engineering laboratory and marine geotechnical labora- tory. Off-campus facilities include a freshwater laboratory in the Pocono Mountains. The requirements of the minor are based on a broad core of marine-related courses within the allied major fields and a field study program. The field study program utilizes the facilities at Wallops Station, Virginia, which is oper- ated by the Marine Science Consortium. The university is a member of the Marine Science Consortium and maintains an active teaching and research program at Wallops Station. Penn State has extensive facilities for teaching and research, including laboratories in marine geology, geochemistry and geophysics, special facilities for marine meteorology and a laboratory for underwater acoustics, as well as a full spec- trum of facilities in the allied majors. PUERTO RICO University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, Puerto Rico The Department of Marine Sciences is a graduate depart- ment offering instruction leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in marine sciences. The primary aim of the department is to train marine scientists for careers in teaching, research and management of marine resources. Students specialize in biological, chemical, geological or physical oceanography; fisheries biology; aquaculture; or marine biotechnology. The academic program includes four core courses in oceanogra- phy, as well as a diversity of specialized courses within the above disciplines. Graduate students receive tuition waivers and stipends for their work as teaching or research assistants. Student support is also available through research grants awarded to faculty members and through the University of Puerto Rico financial aid office. The marine laboratories at La Parguera are in immediate proximity to a variety of coastal tropical marine habitats, including shallow and deepwa- ter coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, rocky and sandy shores, bioluminescent bays and hypersaline pools. The field station maintains collections that include some 13,000 fish specimens (representing more than 171 families), approxi- mately 14,000 invertebrate specimens (representing more than 2,000 species) and some 20,000 species of Caribbean marine macroalgae and vascular plants. The College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences has approximately 90 Ph.D.-level faculty members who carry out research and graduate training in biological, chemical, geological, physical and interdisciplinary oceanography, as well as in geophysics and atmospheric sciences. Labora- tory research and computing facilities are on the main cam- pus in Corvallis and at the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. Research pro- grams are carried out in all areas of the global ocean. The 54-meter research vessel Oceanus is stationed at Newport. The college is a NASA Earth Observing System site with extensive facilities for satellite oceanography research. Master's and Ph.D. degrees are offered in biological, chemical, geological, physical and interdisciplinary ocean- ography, as well as in geophysics and atmospheric sci- ence. The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC), a coastal and marine research facility on Yaquina Bay and steps away from the Pacific Coast, offers programs of study and re- search leading to a Ph.D. in a number of marine science areas awarded by Oregon State University (OSU). HMSC is defined by collaborative partnerships, with multiple state and federal government agencies colocated at HMSC. Numerous formal and informal cooperative arrangements with OSU and other institutions provide opportunities for research, education and outreach. HMSC, in partnership with government agencies, offers teaching and research in numerous programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees in the marine sciences from biological oceanogra- phy, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, ma- rine geology and marine geophysics, engineering, marine biology, fisheries and wildlife, zoology, animal science/ aquaculture environmental science, and science and math education. A student's place of residence in the program is determined by his/her academic needs and chosen field of study and research within OSU. Kutztown University Kutztown, Pa. There are two undergraduate programs in marine science at Kutztown University. A B.S. degree program is available for the Cape Fear River Estuary. The Department of Biology and Marine Biology has modern research and teaching facilities on the main campus and at the Center for Marine Science, located on the Intracoastal Waterway. The university operates a fleet of small research vessels, from 16 to 92 feet, to support research and teaching activities. The department offers a B.S. and M.S. in biological sciences and a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in marine biology. The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio The Ohio State University maintains teaching and research facilities in the marine and aquatic sciences and related fields at the Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie and at the main campus of the university in Co- lumbus. Clatsop Community College is the only two-year institu- tion in Oregon providing comprehensive maritime techni- cal training. The location, 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean on the Columbia River and one mile east of Tongue Point, is well suited for preliminary training in seamanship and commercial fishing. Clatsop College, in partnership with the Oregon Health & Science University-Center for Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction, conducts research for the U.S. Navy at the Marine and Environmental Research Training Station. The certificate for completion of the marine licensing program is accepted in lieu of an exam by the Coast Guard for issuance of master/mate licenses of 100 or 200 gross tons and six-pack operator of uninspected passenger vessels licenses. Students can obtain credit for sea service through U.S. Coast Guard-approved courses. The college offers many other marine-related courses in an individual format. Oregon Institute of Marine Biology Charleston, Ore. An affiliate of the University of Oregon, the institute is located along Coos Bay. Facilities include laboratories with running saltwater, a working library and a 13-meter chartered vessel for routine collection. Additional facilities are available at the University of Oregon. The university awards credit for courses at the institute toward bachelors', master's or doctoral degrees in biology. Courses are offered in summer, fall and spring quarters.
