The department offers a program leading to an M.A. degree in geology, with specialties in climatology/oceanography, geomorphology and quaternary studies, environmental ge- ology and geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrol- ogy, paleontology/palynology, sedimentation and sedimen- tary petrology. Regional tectonic and sedimentary studies include the North Atlantic, the northern Appalachians, the Caribbean, South America and Europe. Full facilities for specimen preparation are available, as are facilities for X- ray diffraction and fluorescence, electron transmission and scanning electron microscopy, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy and high-pressure studies. Field studies are carried out under the guidance of the faculty. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is as- sociated with the City University of New York (CUNY) Oceanography Program and shares a research vessel and modern oceanographic instruments with other depart- ments. The school faculty participates in the CUNY Ph.D. program in Earth and environmental sciences. Cooperative research projects exist with the American Museum of Natu- ral History, the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the Smithsonian Institution. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, N.Y. Degrees in environmental engineering are offered at the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. levels. The major focus of this research and educational program at the oldest engineering school in the country is on fundamentals in the physical, chemical and life sciences, coupled with engineering principles to design solutions to environmental problems. Emphasis is on the importance of investigating the potential for inter- media transport of contaminants. Course offerings include atmospheric pollution, hydrol- ogy and hydraulics, environmental chemodynamics, bio- logical processes and physiochemical processes in system design—a laboratory sequence utilizing unit operations and unit processes for liquid, solid and gaseous contami- nant removal and/or destruction—and a senior capstone design course. Graduate research encompasses physiochemical and biological studies on contaminant destruction and math- ematical modeling of natural and engineered systems. Studies include chemical destruction of sediment contami- nants, commercial-scale sediment decontamination inves- tigations in the New York/New Jersey Harbor and math- ematical modeling of sediment dynamics in the Hudson River estuary, among others. Lab facilities include a full complement of clinical ana- lytical capabilities, besides those at Rensselaer's Keck Wa- ter Quality Lab. A facility dedicated to the measurement of environmental colloids and particles is also available. State University of New York Marine Sciences Research Center Stony Brook, N.Y. The Marine Sciences Research Center offers a B.S. degree in atmospheric and oceanic sciences and offers undergraduates a number of opportunities to experience oceanography, in- cluding a minor in marine sciences. At the graduate level, programs are offered leading to certificates, M.S. degrees and Ph.D. degrees. A one-year program leading to an advanced graduate certificate in oceanic sciences is also available. The M.S. in marine environmental sciences is an interdis- ciplinary, problem-oriented program designed to prepare students for careers in coastal oceanography or environmen- tal management. The program covers complex relationships among biological, physical, chemical, geological, oceano- graphic, meteorological, atmospheric, social, legal, political and economic factors. Instruction consists of conventional courses, case studies, fieldwork and preparation of a thesis. The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare students to effec- tively formulate and attack oceanographic and atmospheric problems on basic, applied or theoretical levels. Students emphasize their own interests in the biological, chemical, geological, physical or management aspects of the coastal zone and, at the same time, learn to integrate all disciplines. The center's Waste Reduction and Management Institute, in collaboration with the School of Continuing Education, offers an 18-credit graduate certificate program in waste manage- ment. The program qualifies people confronting complex and controversial waste issues with the educational background to make informed decisions. The program should appeal to those who consider access to current expertise in waste management essential to working in professional careers or public service activities. The center has other institutes that provide students with an array of opportunities for research institution for New York. Courses in the marine sciences are offered through the departments of ecology and evolution- ary biology, geological sciences, natural resources, civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and others. The New York State College of Veterinary Medicine has a program in the diseases of fish, shellfish, oyster larvae and waterfowl. An intercollege program in aquaculture is administered through the Department of Natural Resources. Intensive summer field courses for undergraduates and the interested lay public are offered at the Shoals Marine Labora- tory. Students earn an associate's in applied science degree in ma- rine technology. The curriculum focuses on vessel operations, preparing students for entry-level positions in the commercial and recreational boating industry, with career opportunities for skilled, hard-working individuals aboard ferries, commer- cial fishing vessels, dinner boats and other work boats. In addition, there are employment opportunities in vessel sales and marina operations. Courses in vessel operations include seamanship, navigation, diesel technology, introduction to computers, auxiliary systems, vessel maintenance, electrical systems, marine electronics, outboard and inboard engines and marina operations. Also, college courses in the depart- ments of English, behavioral sciences, physical and biologi- cal sciences and other areas are studied. Vessel operations students receive interdisciplinary educational experiences on related marine and aquatic topics and can be involved in re- search projects. The vessel operations program is U.S. Coast Guard-approved. A portion of the shipboard time accrued by the graduates and the courses are applicable for licensure up to Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Columbia University Palisades, N.Y. (See Columbia University listing) The observatory is located 15 miles north of New York City. It grew out of Columbia Uni- versity's Department of Geological Sciences (now named the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) and has always maintained a strong bond with the department. The faculty are members of Lamont's senior research staff, and most of the department's graduate students conduct research there. Scientific inquiry ranges from the origin and history of the planet to the processes taking place in and on it. In- terdisciplinary research includes oceanography, seismology, marine geology and geophysics, petrology, geochemistry, cli- mate studies and atmospheric science. Lamont scientists operate the world-ranging, 235-foot re- search vessel Marcus G. Langseth. The ship collects gravity, magnetics and multichannel seismic data and takes dredged rock samples, sediment cores and water samples for physical oceanography and marine biology. The observatory houses the world's largest collection of deep-sea and ocean sedi- ment cores. It collects wireline logging data for all Ocean Drilling Program expeditions. The observatory also operates seismic networks, deploys portable seismometers and has amassed some of the world's most comprehensive databases in seismology and marine geosciences. Facilities include a high-pressure and tempera- ture experiment apparatus; laboratories for rock mechanics, paleomagnetics and tree-ring analysis; and an electronics shop and instrument laboratory. Other instruments allow for the analysis of virtually all elements and isotopes in rocks and water, including mass spectrometers, plasma and solid- source spectrometers, electron microprobes, scanning elec- tron microscopes and X-ray diffraction. Long Island University C.W. Post Campus Brookville, N.Y. Environmental studies at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University are offered at the graduate level on a multidisciplinary basis that allows candidates to specialize in either environmental science or environmental manage- ment. The program puts at the students' disposal the facul- ties, facilities and research capacities of the departments of biology, Earth and environmental science, health care and public administration, computer science and manage- ment engineering, philosophy, chemistry and economics. The environmental science concentration provides op- portunities for specialization in ecology, marine studies, geographic information systems, hydrology and geological environmental studies. The environmental management concentration provides opportunities for specialization in regional planning, environmental politics, urban environ- mental studies and planning and land-use studies. Other specialized concentrations in environmental studies may be pursued. Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, N.J. The Davidson Laboratory at Stevens Institute of Technology is the focal point of graduate programs in oceanographic en- gineering and naval architecture. These programs are offered through the Department of Civil, Environmental and Coastal Engineering. Extensive course offerings at both the master's and doctoral levels include instruction in coastal engineer- ing, physical oceanography, computational fluid dynamics and water quality engineering. Students participate in the experimental research activities of the Davidson Laboratory, an international leader since 1935 in marine hydrodynamics and marine craft development and testing. Facilities include a 96-meter wave/towing tank, a 23-square-meter wave basin, two 10-meter coastal research vessels, a machine-model making shop, a photography shop and extensive dedicated and networked computer facilities. Through Stevens' participation in the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, oceanographic research vessels and experienced crews based at Sandy Hook are readily avail- able. Contact: Dr. Alan F. Several undergraduate programs are offered in disciplines relevant to aquatic science. Alfred has a number of small research vessels. Many of its aquatic activities are con- ducted on nearby Keuka Lake, New York. Instruction and research opportunities are offered in aquatic ecology, hy- drology, geology and environmental studies. No degrees are offered in marine science per se, but courses in geochemistry, geo- physics, sedimentology and ecology are available in the Department of Geology. Graduate students in marine sciences normally enroll in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. There is no separate department of oceanography. Students also take courses in the departments of physics, biology, chemistry and in the School of Engineering. Major facilities available in- clude the largest collection of deep-sea cores in the world at the university's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory [See sepa- rate listing]. Facilities are available for research in physical, chemical, geophysical, acoustical and biological oceanog- raphy; solid-earth geophysics; geochemistry; seismology; ter- restrial and marine geology; paleontology; plant ecophysiol- ogy; atmospheric sciences; climate studies and meteorology; and environmental science. Oceanographic work is carried out on the observatory's research vessel, Marcus G. Langseth. Facilities include modern research laboratories; several vessels, in- cluding the custom-designed research vessels J.M. Kingsbury and J.B. Heiser; computer resources; and a large library sys- tem. Offshore facilities are located at the Shoals Marine Lab- oratory in the Gulf of Maine. Additional facilities are avail- able through cooperative arrangements with the Tunison Fish Nutrition Laboratory of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Cortland, New York.
