A part of the University of California, San Diego, the institu- tion offers programs of study and research leading to doctoral degrees in oceanography, marine biology and Earth sciences. There are eight curricular programs: biological oceanogra- phy, physical oceanography, geological sciences, marine biology, geochemistry and marine chemistry, geophysics, ap- plied ocean sciences and climate sciences. Approximately 100 professors are complemented by an academic staff of nearly 300 research scientists, many of whom have a role in the instructional program. About 35 to 40 students are ad- mitted annually for a total student population of nearly 250. Most students work as research assistants, which not only gives them an early involvement with research but also pro- vides salaries. Class sizes are small, allowing for close inter- action with faculty members in an interdisciplinary approach to marine-related sciences. Students have access to sophisticated and complete special laboratories and facilities for oceanographic studies covering a wide range of disciplines, from biology and physiology to geophysics and atmospheric sciences. A hydraulics labora- tory features a 90-foot stratified wave and current channel. An analytical facility has a host of scanning electron micro- scopes and other high-precision instruments. Scripps' library is the University of California's major collection of marine science materials, with specialization in oceanography, marine biology, marine technology, atmospheric sciences, fisheries science, geology, geophysics and zoology. Various large collections of marine life and geological specimens are housed at the institution. Scripps operates four oceanograph- ic research vessels for local and global expeditions and one research platform, the unique Floating Instrument Platform. Some other facilities are the 1,090-foot Scripps Pier (a diving facility), underwater research areas, experimental aquariums, physiological research pools, a paleomagnetic laboratory, a petrologic laboratory and a marsh reserve. Marine activities at the University of California, Santa Bar- bara, are carried out through the Marine Science Institute and a number of departments, covering more than 14 academic disciplines. Marine research and teaching facilities are lo- cated in a marine laboratory complex and portions of other department buildings. These marine facilities are part of the general university campus located seaside and are close to all other science departments, the library and the computer center. Marine laboratories in several buildings are provided with seawater service. Fieldwork is supported by boats suit- able for work in coastal waters (including those around the Santa Barbara Channel Islands) and by diving and other field equipment. The university operates a field station on Santa Cruz Island. Areas of research and instruction include marine science, ocean engineering and marine policy—with par- ticular strengths in marine biology, marine geology and geo- physics—remote sensing and global change problems. The interdepartmental graduate program in marine science offers studies leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduate pro- grams participating in the marine sciences program include ecology, evolution and marine biology; molecular, cellular and developmental biology; geography; Earth science; and mechanical and environmental engineering, as well as the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Manage- ment. The program is interdisciplinary and emphasizes un- derstanding the ocean as an integrated system. The Depart- ment of Biological Sciences offers an undergraduate major in aquatic (marine and freshwater) biology. Graduate students in biology may take higher degrees (M.A. or Ph.D.) with an emphasis in marine biology. Graduate students in Earth sci- ence may take higher degrees with an emphasis in marine geology and geophysics. The marine sciences program at Santa Cruz offers undergradu- ate and graduate students opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in the study of marine processes and problems. Stanford University Hopkins Marine Station Pacific Grove, Calif. Hopkins Marine Station is operated as a branch of the Stan- ford University's Department of Biological Sciences, offering training in biological sciences. Classes are open to advanced undergraduates and graduates and may be taken by students matriculated at other colleges. Students may specialize in algology, invertebrate zoology, ecology, physiology, cellular and developmental biology, immunology, neurophysiology, and behavior and population biology. Facilities include cir- culating seawater, constant-temperature rooms, laboratories, a darkroom, a library and electron microscopes (electron and scanning). University of California, Berkeley Berkeley, Calif. The University of California (UC), Berkeley, offers marine- related programs in the biological sciences and in engineer- ing. In the life sciences, instruction and research are shared between the Berkeley campus and the Bodega Marine Labo- ratory. A B.S. degree program in biology with specialization in marine biology is billed as a field major. Facilities in the biological sciences include a recirculating seawater system and a number of small craft for subtidal research main- tained by the zoology department. The University Herbarium houses one of the largest collections of marine algae in the United States. The Naval Biomedical Research Laboratory, a unit attached to the School of Public Health, has facilities for research on environmental biology and other topics of interest to the U.S. Navy. There is also a research diving pro- gram. Research in the marine biology field is conducted at the Richmond Field Station and the Bodega Marine Labora- tory. At the undergraduate level, an ocean science and engineering option is available within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Admission can be secured at the freshman or junior-year level with contract through the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Gradu- ate level of study in ocean engineering, naval architecture and offshore engineering can be pursued under the ocean engineering graduate group, leading to M.S., M.E., doctor of engineering or Ph.D. degrees. Major facilities include a model-testing experimental tank at the Richmond Field Sta- tion and Computational Marine Mechanics Laboratory on campus. An interdisciplinary program incorporating a wide range of engineering disciplines, including civil engineer- ing, materials science, mineral engineering, mechanical en- gineering, naval architecture and computer science, is also available under participating engineering departments. www. me.berkeley.edu. University of California, Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory Bodega Bay, Calif. The Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) is an organized research unit of the University of California (UC), Davis, campus that supports research and instruction in the marine sciences. Em- phasis is on population biology/ecology, population genetics, cell biology, organismic biochemistry and biophysics, aqua- culture and fisheries. BML is located on the 426-acre Bodega Marine Reserve, an area offering a remarkably diverse array of intertidal and coastal marine habitats. A marine science curric- ulum in ecology, development and physiology of marine organ- isms is offered in the spring quarter. Other coursework includes the study of coastal ecology, aquaculture and fisheries, marine invertebrates and individual research projects. Master's and doctoral degrees are awarded in marine-related fields through cooperating departments at several UC campuses. BML is used by faculty from other UC campuses, but primarily by Davis and Berkeley scientists. The departments of animal science and geology and the graduate groups in atmospheric science, cell and develop- mental biology, ecology, engineering, hydrologic sciences, microbiology, physiology, plant biology, and population biology offer advanced degrees with thesis research in the general area of marine and freshwater science. and shop facilities, including standard physical and biologi- cal oceanographic equipment, laboratories for the analysis of seawater and sediment characteristics, radioisotope and electron microscope facilities, and computer facilities. The SDSU Marine Laboratory at Mission Bay has exten- sive aquarium facilities supplied by an open-cycle seawater system, which includes heated and chilled water. The labora- tory also contains classrooms and well-equipped instrument laboratories. Specialized facilities operated by SeaWorld are available to the university for research on marine mammals, large fish and aquatic birds. Extensive library holdings in the marine sciences field are supplemented by those of the librar- ies at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the National Marine Fisheries Service at La Jolla. Boat facilities are maintained at the SDSU Marine Labora- tory, where small craft and the 32-foot RV Pelican are avail- able for coastal sampling operations. The use of larger ocean- ographic vessels and some specialized laboratory facilities are arranged in cooperation with Scripps, the National Ma- rine Fisheries Service and other university, state and federal laboratories. The Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC) is a research facility administered by San Francisco State Uni- versity (SFSU). RTC is located on 25 acres of bayfront land on the east side of the Tiburon Peninsula, 22 miles from the main campus. The research and educational activities at RTC focus on estuarine and marine environments and include biologi- cal oceanography, ecological physiology, marine microbiol- ogy and wetland restoration and ecology. Located on the site are laboratories, classrooms, offices, a greenhouse, an animal culturing and husbandry facility, and vessels for bay and coastal research. Selected biology, geography and ge- ology courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level are taught at RTC each academic year. Master's degrees are offered through sponsoring departments of SFSU, and many graduate students conduct their thesis research at the center. The Marine Technology Program (MTP) offers comprehen- sive, affordable training and certification programs in marine technology and commercial diving. Upon completion of two semesters, students can receive the Association of Commer- cial Diving Educators and Association of Diving Contractors certifications required to work in the diving industry. Students can also extend education and employment potential by earning an A.S. degree in marine technology in two semes- ters. The MTP includes scuba, deep-sea air and mixed-gas diving, underwater cutting and welding, bell and saturation diving, undersea vehicle operations, underwater inspection, seamanship, marine engines, compressors, marine weld- ing, marine biology, oceanography, drafting and blueprint reading, and emergency medical technician studies. Santa Barbara City College also offers customized curriculum de- velopment and training programs designed to meet specific needs of various employers for college credit.
