A diversity of nearshore, warm-temperature marine environments is located within a short driving dis- tance from campus, including rocky intertidal, sand and mudflat communities, as well as kelp forest habitats. In addi- tion, subtropical habitats in the Gulf of California are located within a few hours of Los Angeles. SCMI brings together marine-related expertise and re- sources throughout Southern California to provide students with a unique and valuable educational experience. Faculty from CSUN and other SCMI member campuses offer a pro- gram called the CSU Marine Biology Semester on Catalina Island. This semester-long program provides an intensive un- dergraduate exposure to marine biology, including courses in invertebrate zoology, marine ecology and the ecology of marine fishes. The program is based at the Wrigley Marine Science Center situated on Santa Catalina Island. Students spend 15 weeks on Santa Catalina Island, have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and have ready access to a wide variety of marine habitats. The CSUN Marine Biology Program emphasizes ecological approaches and hands-on field and laboratory experiences. Field trips are an integral part of all marine courses and regu- larly include trips aboard the university's research vessel to the California Channel Islands (e.g., Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara and San Nicholas islands), as well as excursions to the central California coast (San Simeon) and Baja California, Mexico. The CSUN Marine Biology Program provides the opportunity for undergraduate students to perform directed, project-oriented work and to participate in faculty research projects. These M.S. programs include possible emphasis in marine sciences. California State University, Stanislaus Turlock, Calif. California State University, Stanislaus, offers a marine biology concentration within both the undergraduate B.A. and B.S. degrees in biological sciences and an M.S. marine science degree as a consortium member of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) [See separate listing]. All coursework for the M.S. marine science program is taken at MLML. Stu- dents in the undergraduate marine biology concentration typically take one or more courses at MLML. College of the Redwoods Ft. Bragg, Calif. College of the Redwoods' Marine Science Technology (MST) program is designed to train students for employment with a wide variety of fishery and wildlife agencies, marine and environmental consulting firms, marine aquariums and ma- rine laboratories. The program is flexible, however, and can be tailored to meet the individual academic career goals of each student. College of the Redwoods' MST program pre- pares students for employment as an entry-level technician, or for transfer into an upper division marine or environmental science program with the eventual goal of obtaining a higher degree. Individuals interested in improving their understand- ing of marine and coastal environments, or upgrading their technical skills, will also find this program valuable. The pro- gram emphasizes hands-on experiences that provide the stu- dents with practical skills they need to work in this field. Stu- dents will also have the opportunity to serve as interns with potential employers. This allows students to work with other technicians and scientists before they graduate, and students can establish personal contacts that could be instrumental in starting their careers. Numerous state and federal agencies, research institutions, private consultants and marine aquari- ums support the program by offering internships or occupa- tional experience. Two options exist for program participants. An A.S. degree is awarded to students for satisfactory comple- tion of the major requirements (24 units), 12 additional units of recommended elective courses, and successful comple- tion of general education and graduation requirements. A certificate of achievement is awarded for completion of the major requirements plus a minimum of six additional units of recommended elective courses. Humboldt State University Arcata, Calif. Located in Trinidad, California, 290 miles north of San Fran- cisco, the Humboldt State University (HSU) Marine Labora- tory offers classes in the bachelor of science degree programs of marine biology, fisheries biology (with a marine fish and aquaculture option) and oceanography. Master of science programs are offered in biology and fisheries biology. The wet lab has temperature-regulated seawater from a 150,000-gal- lon recirculating system that provides water to a variety of sizes of tanks and trays. Other teaching and research facili- ties include classrooms, an aquarium room for controlled CALIFORNIA California Maritime Academy Vallejo, Calif. The academy has programs of study leading to a B.S. degree and a professional license. Cal Maritime is a college of busi- ness, logistics, engineering, technology and transportation studies and is a unique campus of the California State Uni- versity (CSU) system. The mission of the California Maritime Academy is to provide each student with a quality college education, combining intellectual learning, applied technol- ogy, leadership development and global awareness. In recent years, Cal Maritime has placed 100 percent of its graduates in positions with above-average starting salaries. Hands-on training is an important part of our curriculum. Students practice in state-of-the-art facilities such as bridge and steam plant simulators. After their first year of classes, students apply their skills on a two-month training cruise aboard the training ship Golden Bear. The 500-foot ocean- going vessel sails to exotic ports around the Pacific Ocean, such as Chile, Peru, Easter Island, Australia, Hawaii, Guam and Japan. Unique among the CSU campuses is our leadership de- velopment program. Cal Maritime students participate in the Corps of Cadets, which prepares and develops them to be- come leaders and decision makers in their fields. California State Polytechnic University Pomona, Calif. The ocean engineering program offers a minor and a cer- tificate to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in aerospace, chemical and materials, civil, electrical and com- puter engineering; engineering technology; and industrial, manufacturing and mechanical engineering. The program acquaints the students with the many aspects of the ocean and marine environment to prepare them for a professional career in the oceans. Cal Poly Pomona emphasizes the hands-on approach to education. Supporting the year-round program are vessels ranging from trailerable craft to the 80-foot research vessels Yellowfin and Sea Watch. In addition to the formal curricu- lum, the students have the opportunity for independent re- search. Supporting resources include the Wrigley Institute of Environmental Studies at Fishermans Cove, Catalina Island, which provides an outstanding venue for test and evaluation of ocean engineering projects. California State University, Fullerton Fullerton, Calif. California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), is located 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, within 30 minutes driving time of the Upper Newport Bay and Bolsa Chica Marine Ecological Reserves and 50 minutes off the rocky shorelines of the Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach and Dana Point. The department has two aquarium rooms, one with temperature- controlled recirculating seawater, and research and teach- ing labs designed to support marine studies. CSUF is also a member of the Ocean Studies Institute (OSI) and the South- ern California Marine Institute, consortia made up of other universities in the Los Angeles region. As a member of these consortia, CSUF faculty and students have access to facilities in Los Angeles Harbor and oceanographic vessels, includ- ing the Yellowfin. CSUF is also a participant with other OSI campuses in offering a marine biology semester in residence at the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies laboratory on Santa Catalina Island. The Department of Biological Science offers a B.S. degree with a formal emphasis in marine biology. The department also offers an M.S. degree, which requires a research the- sis. Numerous opportunities are available for undergradu- ate students to participate in faculty research programs and obtain independent research experience. In addition, the Department of Geological Sciences offers undergraduate coursework in marine geology and oceanography. California State University, Northridge Northridge, Calif. The California State University, Northridge (CSUN), campus is in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, less than a one-hour drive to the berth of the RV Yellowfin, an 80-foot research vessel. The boat, owned and maintained by the Southern California Marine Institute (SCMI), is utilized for class-related field trips, research grant work and graduate ALABAMA Dauphin Island Sea Lab/ Alabama Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium Dauphin Island, Ala. Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium (MESC) is the state of Alabama's institution dedicated to the support of the marine and related sciences instructional programs at its 22 member colleges and universities. MESC also provides re- search and services directed toward state and regional needs. Offices, labs and dormitories are located at the Dauphin Is- land Sea Lab (Dauphin Island, Alabama) on a 30-acre com- plex owned by the consortium. The consortium has access to two marine vessels and a marsh laboratory. Various degree programs are offered by the 22 members, ranging from B.S. to Ph.D., with specialization in marine sciences, primarily in biological fields. The consortium hosts visiting scientists from throughout the United States who find the facilities and geo- graphic location ideal for a wide variety of investigations in biology, geology, oceanography, estuarine science and coast- al zone management. Talladega College, an independent, coeducational, four- year liberal arts college, has an undergraduate curriculum designed to prepare students for graduate studies in marine sciences. Pertinent courses include organismic biology, gen- eral ecology, invertebrate zoology, comparative vertebrate anatomy and vertebrate physiology. Arrangements with other marine science institutions allow students summer access to courses in marine biology, marine ecology, marine geol- ogy and oceanography. Fellowships, research opportunities, coastal field trips, ocean cruises and seminars are some of the additional opportunities available to marine science students at Talladega College. The University of Alabama and 18 other Alabama colleges and universities jointly operate the Marine Science Program, housed at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (Dauphin Island, Ala- bama) as part of the Marine Environmental Sciences Consor- tium (MESC) [See separate listing]. The College of Arts and Sciences offers an interdisciplinary, double-major program in marine science, leading to a B.S. degree. This curriculum gives the student a broad base of understanding in the basic sciences, exposes the student to the diversity of marine sci- ence fields and provides in-depth study in a specific segment of marine science. Program components include: general ac- ademic requirements, an interdisciplinary major composed of marine science courses and a single department major in biology, chemistry or geology. Eighteen graduate courses, two undergraduate courses and several special topics and semi- nar courses are offered by the Graduate Program in Marine Sciences and Limnology. In support of the degree program, facilities are provided for research in biological, biochemical, chemical, geological, microbiological, fisheries and physical oceanography. Equipment includes state-of-the-art oceano- graphic instruments, such as mass spectrometers, radioisotopic tracer facilities, an experimental flow cytometer, ultraviolet la- ser Raman and infrared spectrophotometers and an advanced Ingres database management system. Shore facilities include a remote biological field station at Kasitsna Bay and the Seward Marine Center. The Seward Marine Center is homeport for the Institute of Marine Science-administered 40-meter University- National Oceanographic Laboratory System RV Alpha Helix and the Little Dipper, a 10-meter coastal vessel. The Seward Marine Center also boasts a high-quality running seawater system and tank farm.
